Hosts grab 4 taekwondo golds on magical Monday
Vietnamese team strong on the opening day of the martial art, look to bag more medals later in the tournament
HÀ NỘI The Vietnamese team had a great day in the opening of the taekwondo at the Southeast Asian Games 31, securing four golds yesterday.
The hosts, comprising Hứa Văn Huy, Nguyễn Ngọc Minh Hy, Trần Đăng Khoa, Nguyễn Thị Kim Lê and Châu Tuyết Văn, won a gold medal in the mixed freestyle Poomsae in taekwondo .
They completed the performance with a total of 7.791 points for a top ranking on the first day in the martial art at Hà Nội’s Tây Hồ sports centre.
The Philippines' Janna Dominique Oliva Timoteo, Juvenile Faye Crisostomo Pulista, Justin Kobe Macario Ronquillo, Darius Venerable Dayo and Jeordan Dominguez Yacapen finished the performance with 7.366 points for silver.
The Laos team of Lukkee Sengmanee, Latthachak Philavanh, Soulasak Siphanya, Azern Lathvongxay and Kidavone Philavong took bronze with 6.223 points.
In the women’s team, recognised poomsae trio Nguyễn Thị Kim Hà, Ngô Thị Thuỳ Dung, and Nguyễn Thị Hồng Trang got 8.016 points to win gold.
Thailand’s Ornawee Srisahakit, Pichamon Limpaiboon and Phenkanya Phaisankiattikun received a silver medal for their 7.882 points performance.
Laos and Malaysia shared bronze.
In the men’s team recogised poomsae, Trần Duy Hồ, Nguyễn Đình Khôi and Nguyễn Thiên Phụng earned 7.782 points for gold.
Patrick King Perez Dela Cruz, Raphael Enrico Mella Herrera and Rodolfo Jr. Reyes Llena from the Philippines took the silver medal with an accumulated 7.732 points.
Bronze medals went to Singapore and Indonesia.
The final competition of the afternoon was the women's standard poomsae.
Jocel Lyn Ninobla of the Philippines excellently won gold with 7,765 points, while athlete Lê Trần Kim Uyên of Việt Nam won the silver medal. Bronze medals were awarded to two athletes, Nurul Hidayah of Malaysia and Ornawee Srisahalit of Thailand.
Athletes will continue in the combat events at Tây Hồ Gymnasium today.
