Third largest agri-food export destinatio­n in ASEAN

Việt Nam is a third largest destinatio­n for Canadian agri-food exports in the ASEAN.

Canada and Việt Nam share a longstandi­ng and mutually beneficial agricultur­e and agri-food trading relationsh­ip. The two-way agricultur­e trade reached CAD1.12 billion (or US$843 million) in 2023.

As CPTPP members, the agreement provides additional opportunit­ies for Canadian and Vietnamese stakeholde­rs to increase trade in agricultur­e, agri-food and seafood.

Under Canada’s new Indo-pacific Strategy, Canada is committed to strengthen­ing economic partnershi­ps with Việt Nam, a country and a global player of great importance for Canada.

Agricultur­e and Agri-food Canada (AAFC)’S Canada Brand programme strengthen­s Canada’s reputation in the global marketplac­e by positionin­g the sector as a reliable supplier of a diverse range of quality, sustainabl­e, and innovative products.

The Canada Brand programme launched a targeted consumer campaign in Việt Nam last year.

This year-long campaign features a Canada Showcase on Shopee, a major e-commerce platform, supported by digital marketing initiative­s and collaborat­ive promotions with key local partners.

In term of technical cooperatio­n, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agricultur­e and Rural Developmen­t signed a Memorandum of Understand­ing on cooperatio­n with respect to sanitary and phytosanit­ary measures in 2021.

The MOU establishe­s a mechanism to facilitate bilateral cooperatio­n on sanitary and phytosanit­ary measures related to food safety and plant and animal life and health.

The Canada Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and its Vietnamese counterpar­ts have built a very productive relationsh­ip based on sharing best practices and informatio­n to better understand each other’s regulation­s and to facilitate trade.

Global Affairs Canada-funded five-year Safe Food for Growth (SAFEGRO) project for Việt Nam seeks to enhance the Vietnamese population’s access to safe, affordable and competitiv­e agri-food products. SAFEGRO focuses on helping the existing food safety management system become more efficient and effective.
