Chinese FM holds talks with US secretary of state
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken yesterday in Beijing.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said that China's attitude has always been consistent.
China views and develops China-us relations from the world vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity.
He said China's position has always been consistent.
China adheres to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, and commits to promoting the stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-us relations.
Wang said China's request has always been consistent. China proposes to respect each other's core interests, and urges the US side not to interfere in China's internal affairs, suppress China's development, or cross China's red lines when it comes to China's sovereignty, security, and development interests.
Noting that in November last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden met in San Francisco and jointly outlined a future-oriented San Francisco vision, Wang said under the leadership of the two heads of state, China-us relations have been generally stabilized from further deterioration, and bilateral dialogue, cooperation and positive aspects in various fields have increased, which is welcomed by the two peoples and the international community.
On the other hand, China-us relations are still facing increasing negative factors and various disruptions, Wang said, adding that China's legitimate development rights are being unreasonably suppressed, and China's core interests have been constantly challenged.
He stressed that whether China and the United States should stick to the right path of stability or repeat the mistake of a downward spiral is a major issue facing the two countries, which tests the sincerity and capability of both sides.
The world is waiting to see whether the two countries will lead international cooperation to address global issues and achieve win-win outcomes, or confront each other, even break out into conflicts and lead to a lose-lose situation, Wang added.
'Very clear, very direct'
As he opened the meeting with Wang, Blinken said he would be "very clear, very direct", but added, "I hope we make some progress on the issues our presidents agreed" on at the California summit.
He said the United States and China needed to show that they are "managing responsibly the most consequential relationship, I think, for both of us in the world".
The two countries should be as "clear as possible about the areas where we have differences -- at the very least to avoid misunderstandings, to avoid miscalculations", Blinken said.
"That really is a shared responsibility that we have not only for our own people, but for people around the world, given the impact that our relationship has," he said.
Biden, who recently spoke by telephone with Xi, faces a tough re-election fight in November against his predecessor Donald Trump.
The Biden administration has highlighted wins achieved by its diplomacy with China including what officials say is the first crackdown in years by Beijing on producers of precursor chemicals to fentanyl, the painkiller behind an addiction epidemic in the United States.
A State Department official said Blinken would ask China for more consistent law-enforcement action.
But while open to cooperation, Biden has increased pressure on China beyond Trump in some areas.
In the latest move, the US Congress, with Biden's support, voted to force the divestment of Tiktok from Chinese company Bytedance or risk a ban in the United States.
US officials allege security and privacy concerns over the app, which has taken off among US teenagers.
Bytedance denies the allegations and has insisted it has no intention of selling.
