Tây Nguyên poised for green, circular economy
Tây Nguyên (Central Highlands) will be a region of sustainable development with a green and circular economy by the year 2050.
Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has just signed planning approval for the region for the period 2021-30, and includes a vision through to 2050.
The plan states that by then the area will be a region of sustainable development, with a green and circular economy, with large production areas for industrial crops, fruit trees, vegetables and flowers and be a renewable energy centre.
It covers the whole Tây Nguyên region including the entire administrative boundaries of the five provinces of Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Đắk Lắk, Đắk Nông and Lâm Đồng.
The region must also establish a number of high-quality tourist areas, to become more attractive destinations for domestic and foreign visitors.
Under the plan, ecological space and forest ecosystems will be preserved and the traditional cultural identity promoted as a foundation for harmonious development between the local economy, culture and society while supporting the environment.

and synchronised infrastructure, to connect with the major economic centres of the country and the international economic integration.
Tây Nguyên needs to develop a highly efficient, ecological, organic and large-scale agri economy associated with hi-tech production. The region needs to focus on developing key crops such as coffee, rubber, cashews, pepper, fruit trees of durian, avocado, passion fruit, medicinal plants and temperate climate vegetables and flowers with a market of branded products.
Farming will also include concentrated cattle raising and aquaculture areas of cold water fish such as salmon and sturgeon.
This will be the basis for the region to form an agricultural focal centre, associated with a region-level high-tech agricultural zone and economic corridor linking agricultural product value chains between localities.
In terms of forestry development, Tây Nguyên will restructure
tonwadrds the industry sustainability combined with national target programmes,
form high-tech application forestry zones, develop the forest economy and encourage the planting of production forests in suitable areas to create raw material areas, which will also improve the lives of forest workers.
In industrial policy, those processing and manufacturing industries that are environmentally friendly and associated with the advantages of raw material sources in the region should be prioritised.
The region will form processing industrial zones, linking with central urban areas and economic corridors and industrial areas in the South Central and Southeast sub-regions.
Meanwhile, the service industry will develop a reciprocal relationship with agriculture and industry focussing on supply and consumption markets both in and outside the region along corridors connecting with major international seaports.
According to the plan, trade will be developed in harmony between the traditional and modern, suitable to the specific conditions of urban and rural markets, while promoting trans-border trading activities.
The region will focus on developing eco-tourism and cultural tourism associated with preserving and promoting the cultural values and identities of the Central Highlands ethnic groups.
