Peaceful Zambia impresses UN
By OSCAR MALIPENGA THE United Nations says it is happy that Zambia is peaceful and stable whilst other countries in the region are not.
United Nations women regional director for East and Southern Africa Izeduwa Derex-Briggs has congratulated the Zambian government for maintaining peace and stability after the general elections.
Speaking when she paid a courtesy call on the VicePresident Inonge Wina, Ms Briggs said the UN was happy that there was peace and stability in Zambia when other countries in region were not.
The UN Director, who is in the country to attend the Forum for African Women Educationists Conference, has so far held several meetings with Minister of Gender Victoria Kalima, Higher Education minister Nkandu Luo, traditional leaders, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and Civil Society Organisations to arrive at an overview of Zambia.
Ms Derex-Briggs said there were a lot of good things happening in Zambia especially in women empowerment programmes.
Earlier, the Vice-President told Ms Derex-Briggs that Zambia was a democratic country and which had held several elections.
“…but we find that a number of women in politics is increasing at a very low pace when it comes to elective positions in Parliament,” she said.
