By MUKOSELA KASALWE TOURISM is a catalyst for cultural exchange and it encourages the preservation of cultural and historical resources, says Ministry of Tourism and Arts public relations officer Sakabilo Kalembwe.

Mr Kalembwe said the tourism sector had encouraged the conservation and preservation of natural, cultural and historical resources and brought about community revitalization.

He said the tourism sector was a catalyst for development and improved the quality of people’s lives directly and indirectly.

In a commemoration message for the World Tourism Day, which falls on September 27 Mr Kalembwe said tourism encouraged civic involvement and pride.

“Tourism provides cultural exchange between hosts and guests, it also encourages the preservation and celebration of local festivals and cultural events,

He said the year’s event was globally celebrated under the theme Sustainable Tourism – a Tool for Development.

Mr Kalembwe said Zambia had adopted a localised theme, “Sustainable Tourism Involves and Benefits All”.

He said in Lusaka, the Ministry had prepared a march-past from Kwacha House, into Great East Road and end up in the Showgrounds where it would culminate into an extravaganza of music, dance, local cuisine and fashion show.

Mr Kalembwe said other regions across the country had arranged similar fashion activities in Livingstone, Ndola and Kasama.

He said Zambia was a signatory to many of United Nations protocols and instruments, the UNWTO being one of such.
