Nakacinda warns against political rhetoric
DO not gamble with the economy by pretending that Zambia can do without the International Monetary Fund (IMF) package, MMD national secretary Raphael Nakacinda has warned.
Mr Nakacinda said political rhetoric has the potential to cripple a country’s economy.
He said government should be able to measure the extent to which political rhetoric could be used when it came to economic matters.
He reiterated that there was need for objectivity when it came to issues that bordered on the country’s economy.
Mr Nakacinda pointed out that it was no secret that the economy was still struggling and that the IMF package was a must-have.
He said that liquidity in the Zambian economy had been limited, hence there was need for some kind of a bailout.
Mr Nakacinda advised Government not to gamble with the economy by making boastful pronouncements that the country could do without the package.
“Particularly to government officials, I think let’s not take political rhetoric to the wire. We need to measure at what point we can engage into political rhetoric. When it comes to economic matters, we have to be seen to be clearly objective.
“Nobody can deny that our economy is struggling, the liquidity has been very limited and therefore there is need for some kind of a bailout,” he said.
Mr Nakacinda said that the IMF had proved that it was the best package Zambia could benefit from to recover the economy swiftly.
He however stressed the need for consistent policy pronouncements from Government to end the scourge of contradictory statements.
