Two denied bail applicatio­n

By JUSTINA MULENGA THE Lusaka Magistrate Court yesterday declined a bail applicatio­n by two Congolese nationals suspected to have stolen medicines at Medical Stores.

This was in a matter which came up for plea yesterday before principal magistrate Greenwell Malumani.

Magistrate Malumani told the two Congolese nationals who had applied for bail that it had been declined because they failed to meet the required conditions.

He explained that it was difficult to trace them if they did not bring their sureties, who happened to be government employees and were residing in Lusaka.

When the matter came up for plea, all the seven accused persons pleaded not guilty to all the three charges they were facing.

It was alleged that the 7 accused persons who were jointly charged, broke into Medical Stores Limited with intent to commit a felony on August 20, 2017.

The 7 accused persons include two business men, two Congolese nationals, and 3 Medical Stores employees.

Paul Bwalya, a Medical Stores Limited warehouse assistant, his receiving assistant Kalaluka Munyandekw­a and a driver Ananias Simimba are jointly charged with two Congolese nationals and other Zambians for theft by servant and breaking into a building with intent to commit a felony.

In the second count Kalaluka Munyandekw­a, Paul Bwalya and Ananias Simumba between January 2016 and August, 2017 in Lusaka jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown being a person employed as warehouse assistants and driver of medical stores limited, did steal assorted medicine altogether valued at K3, 001,223.30 the property of the Medical Stores Limited.

And in the third count it was alleged that Ntambwe Chikomba, Kalaluka Munyandekw­a, Paul Bwalya, Ananias Simumba, Moses Sakala and Oliver Chipapala, between January 2016 and August 2017 in Lusaka jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown, did steal assorted drugs altogether valued at K3,001,223.30 the property of Medical Stores Limited.

Magistrate Malumani adjourned the matter to October 20 2017 for mention and October 30 2017.
