FREEDOM FIGHTERS DESERVE BETTER

YOUTH Aid has bemoaned the poor living conditions of freedom fighters and has called on the government and well-wishers to support the great men and women who risked all for Zambia’s independen­ce.

Organisati­on chairperso­n, Kachenga Chungu said there was need to improve the living conditions of freedom fighters for their sacrifice during the liberation struggle.

In an interview yesterday, he said Zambia could not achieve the required developmen­t if it neglected its history of the men and women who were in the forefront of the struggle for freedom.

Mr Chungu said the nongovernm­ental organisati­ons (NGOs), had bestowed freedom fighter Zanco Mpundu who is portrayed on the freedom statue breaking loose chains of colonialis­m, as its good will ambassador in line with the ended Independen­ce Day celebratio­ns.

He hailed Mr Mpundu for the exceptiona­l courage and determinat­ion and the great sacrifice among other freedom fighters during the Zambia’s liberation struggle.

“The Government and well-wishers should continue supporting and coming to the aid of these great country men and women that risked it all for our independen­ce and indeed went through a lot of discomfort to see the country where it is today,” he said

He implored the business community to engage some of the freedom fighters brand them ambassador­s of their goods and services.

Mr Chungu said the innovation would help market as well as enable citizens to remember surviving freedom fighters.

Mr Chungu said the rolled out Zambia unite campaign under the One Zambia One nation motto has been well received by citizens and was gaining ground.
