Dangerous unsafe sinkhole fixed

-

By KALOBWE BWALYA

THE sinkhole developed on Kabwe roundabout on Sunday following heavy down pour has been worked on and motorist are free to use the road.

Lusaka City Council acting public relations manager George Sichimba Mr Sichimba said the council, Road Development Agency( RDA) and Ministry Local Government engineers swiftly responded to an alert by some concerned motorists through social media at around 17:00 hours.

Mr Sichimba said the combined team quickly mobilised and worked on the hole by fill and mending it to ensure that lives of the motorists and other road users were not put at risk.

He said the works were temporal because the cause of the sinkhole was not yet established, but engineers were carrying out investigations to establish what could have caused the sink-hole and to avoid a possible recurrence of the problem.

“Therefore, LCC wishes to correct the impression and pictures circulating on social media that the sinkhole has just developed and it is still unattended to. The sinkhole was mended last evening (Sunday).

“However, motorists are advised to drive with the usual caution on the roundabout and other parts of town where rain water could have collected because you cannot tell what lies beneath the water.”

And Mr Sichimba is disappointed by some Lusaka residents who are blaming LCC over the floods at Cosmopolitan shopping mall in Makeni area.

Mr Sichimba explained that the mall was privately owned therefore the responsibility of solving the floods fell on the owners.

“I would like to advise some Lusaka residents who are blaming council over the flooding at Cosmopolitan Mall yesterday (Sunday). The mall is private property and the responsibility of sorting out the alleged floodings there falls squarely on the owners,” he said.
