Govt reaffirms free primary education

- By JACKSON MAPAPYI

CHAVUMA District Commissioner Benjamin Mufunga says government remains committed to the provision of free education from Grades one to seven.

Mr Mufunga said government had attached great importance to the life-long process of producing graduates capable of spurring development in both the private and public sectors.

He said the continued provision of free learning and teaching materials such as textbooks, disbursement of quarterly grants to schools and payment of salaries for teachers as well as provision of social schemes such as Keeping the girls in schools is evidence enough of government's resolve to provide free education.

"And apart from that, the continued recruitment and deployment of teachers in all districts of which Chavuma is a beneficiary is another commitment shown by government to provide free and quality education,"Mr Mufunga said.

The district commissioner was speaking during the stakeholders meeting organised by the district education board secretary's office.

He however said the cause attached to the task is enormous for government alone to fully undertake such programmes in view of numerous commitments it is obliged to meet towards it citizens.

He called on other stakeholders especially parents to play an active role in supplementing government's efforts by appreciating the need for cause sharing especially when the children go beyond grade seven level.
