COUNCIL ACTS TO CURB UNDERAGE DRINKING

NDOLA City Council (NCC) has confiscate­d boxes of alcohol from illegal traders across the central business district (CBD) council public relations manager Tilyenji Mwanza has disclosed.

Ms. Mwanza said in statement that the exercise was aimed at halting escalating levels of underage drinking in the city.

Ms. Mwanza said the local authority's department of public health had confiscate­d hundreds of boxes of alcohol sold illegally by people without liquor licences.

She said it was noted with sadness that many people had been selling alcohol illegally at bus stops making the alcoholic brew accessible to persons underage.

"The alcohol confiscate­d includes Mosi, Castle, Eagle Lager, Ginger sky, Johnneys, Kankoyo, Kantobo, Chibuku Shake Shake, Bols, Right Choice, and Officers, among others.

The law abhors the sale of liquor to underage people.

Ms Mwanza said the council had also received some complaints of underage drinking and drug abuse parties taking place in some locations of the city.

Ms. Mwanza warned to members of the community involved in organising such events that the law would soon catch up with them.

She disclosed that the local authority would be working with police service to ensure that perpetrato­rs were arrested and prosecuted.
