Unchlorinated domestic boreholes sealed off
KAMWALA Ward 5 councillor Moses Bwalya has led a team of council officials to inspect and close down unchlorinated domestic boreholes in the area to help reduce the possibility of water contamination.
Mr Bwalya led a team of Lusaka City Council (LCC) public health department on foot patrols to inspect and deliver notices of closure of water points not yet fitted with chlorinators.
He explained that the mission was aimed at sensitizing landlords to install chlorinators at their water intake points to avoid underground water contamination.
“My mission today was to serve closure notices of water points to landlords who have bole holes but have not yet fitted them with chlorinators,
“We served notices to 11 houses which were found not yet fitted with chlorinators. We were mindful not to close all points because of other factors,” he said.
Mr Bwalya however expressed delight as most boreholes in the area were already fitted with the chlorinators. A few of them did not have purifiers.
The councillor had embarked on a campaign to rid his ward of water-borne diseases following recent threats of typhoid and other diarrheal diseases in the area.
He said for the first time the ward had recorded an outbreak of typhoid over 10 weeks ago, but that “although we have experienced some deaths, I should be quick to mention that the situation is under control now because of the interventions put across by my office as area councillor working with the Lusaka district health management team (LDHMT)”.
