ZCTU warns tax evaders
THE Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has reminded employers in the habit of evading tax that it was an ugly syndrome which creates a heavy burden on poor innocent workers.
ZCTU president, Chishimba Nkole is categorical on this and wants the government to strengthen its cooperation with other governments in curbing the menace.
“Although the practice of avoiding tax by global elites may not be illegal, it was unethical.
“In Zambia, workers continue to carry the heavy burden of tax through high Pay As You Earn and other related taxes, while the elites avoid it with impunity,” noted Mr. Nkole during an end of year media briefing in Lusaka on Friday.
Culprits who commit criminal tax evasion break the law, usually by failing to report all of their income, or by claiming certain deductions on their tax returns to which they are not entitled.
For instance in the United States tax evasion is a criminal activity, with significant criminal penalties.
Meanwhile the ZCTU chief has commended Government for the establishment of a national airline saying the move will create the much needed employment in the aviation industry.
He said the importance of establishing a national airline cannot be over-emphasised as the venture would create linkages which will enhance the current Gross Domestic Product.
Transport Minister Brian Mushimba has since disclosed that cabinet had approved establishment of a national airline to be run in partnership with Ethiopian Airlines.
