I’LL NOT QUIT

- By KALOBWE BWALYA

I HAVE no intention to resign as Lusaka mayor and those issuing fake statements circulating on social media are cyber bullies, says Lusaka mayor Wilson Kalumba. Mr Kalumba said those peddling lies that he had resigned were fighting a losing battle and should be treated as criminals.

In an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr Kalumba said the statement that was circulating on social media should be treated as a hoax and dismissed with the contempt it deserved.

He said he had a five-year mandate to serve the people of Lusaka, and would ensure that he delivered to people’s expectations.

“It is not true that I have resigned and I have no intention of resigning.

“It is laughable that people can fabricate such a lie, yesterday (Tuesday) I even chaired a full council meeting,” said Mr Kalumba.

“I have no intentions of resigning as Lusaka Mayor. People who are spreading rumours on social media are my political enemies and their wishful thinking is that I resign so that they can take over. There is no reason for me to resign,” he said.

I am working full-time and this morning I attended the daily multi-sectoral cholera preparedness briefing at the Ministry of Health and later in the day, I toured Chibolya and Soweto markets to check on sanitation conditions and how the cleaning exercise is progressing,” he added.

Mr Kalumba has been under intense public pressure to perform as the cholera epidemic broke out under his watch.

President Edgar Lungu last week slammed the Lusaka City Council for its inertia in tackling problems besetting the city such as uncontrolled street vending and mounting garbage.

The President called on the council to improve in service delivery to meet people’s expectations.
