Clean Zambia thrills Chief Chanje

- By MUKOSELA KASALWE

CHIEF Chanje of the Chewa people of Chipata city has applauded Government for initiating a vigorous countrywide clean-up exercise aimed at enhancing sanitation.

In an interview, Chief Chanje said even before the cholera outbreak, sanitation standards in most parts of Zambia were poor.

The traditional leader said although it was government’s obligation, through local authorities, to ensure the environment was clean, citizens must take responsibility at an individual level.

“I would like to thank Government for taking the initiative to clean all the towns in Zambia because even before the cholera outbreak, sanitation standards were poor but now the situation has actually improved,” Chief Chanje said.

He said people must change the uncaring attitude towards the clean environment.

Chief Chanje called on Chipata City Council to provide provisional toilets at Jere market, which has been closed for lacking sanitation facilities.

He said this had forced traders and consumers to travel long distances to Kapata market.

He said there was need for a temporary measure to relocate street vendors to Mpenzeni Park.

Chief Chanje added that although some money from the Constituency Development Fund was allocated to the proposed construction of Mchenga market, the council had failed to supervise works.

Meanwhile, a Malawian national has been struck to death by lightning in Chief Chanje’s chiefdom. The traditional leader identified the deceased as Wintala Banda, 67, a resident of Kamampina village.

Chief Chanje said the victim met his fate at Kapasa trading centre when he tried to cross the road during a heavy downpour.
