- By MUYANI SHINJABALE HEALTH

Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) has applauded the successful separation of Siamese twins by local health experts at University Teaching Hospital (UTH) last week.

HPCZ public relations officer Terry Musonda said the council was proud to be associated with the breakthrough by local surgeons, doctors and consultants, who were involved in the separation of the twins Bupe and Mapalo.

In an interview, Mr. Musonda noted that the blend of competence, expertise, support, equipment and practical skills had potential to ensure quality health provision to the Zambian people.

“It continues to be the Council’s main priority to ensure patients’ safety and it is for this reason that we keep on emphasizing on highly competent and certified health practitioners to handle patients,” Mr. Musonda said.

He was commenting on the successful separation of the seven-month-old conjoined twins in the landmark operation last week.

He commended UTH management for constituting a team of experts and ensuring the hospital was well equipped with necessary facilities that necessitated the successful surgery.

Mr. Musonda said credit should be given where it was due and that HPCZ was happy to see that its efforts to promote quality healthcare in Zambia were bearing fruit.

He said the successful surgery was testimony that Zambia had potential to achieve medical breakthroughs.
