KAMBA TELLS OFF ‘HYPOCRITICAL’ UPND

-

By NATION REPORTER

IT is hypocrisy of the highest order for the UPND to pray double standards by arguing that it was their constitutional right to move an impeachment motion against President Edgar Lungu while on the other hand cry foul when others try to move a motion limiting attempts one can make at the Presidency, Kennedy Kamba has said.

Mr Kamba, who is PF Lusaka Province youth chairman, charged that it was disappointing that the same UPND that was championing the Presidential impeachment cried like an unfed baby when a private members bill that seeks to bar a presidential candidate who has lost elections three times from contesting elections was mooted.

Mr Kamba said the same way UPND law makers had exercised their constitutional rights to table the Presidential impeachment motion, should be the way they must also allow Chifubu Constituency law maker, Francis Ng’ambi to move a motion to limit the number of times a person may contest Presidential elections.

He told the Daily Nation yesterday that nobody should cry like a baby when Mr Ng’ambi takes the private members bill to the House because ‘what is good for the gander must be good for the goose’, adding that Mr Ng’ambi who proposed the bill exercised his constitutional right just like the UPND lawmakers had enjoyed their rights on the impeachment motion.

Mr Kamba said PF youths in Lusaka welcomes a motion limiting the number of times one may contest the Presidency and urged Mr Ng’ambi to swiftly and without delay expedite the process of limiting attempts one can make on the Presidency as a way of promoting democracy.

“As PF youths in Lusaka we welcome and fully support the motion to ban anyone who has lost three presidential elections from contesting as presidential candidate in national elections.

“We urge Honorable Francis Ng’ambi to quickly table the motion in Parliament and we want to assure him that as Youths from Patriotic Front we are in full support of the motion,” Mr Kamba said.

Mr Kamba said this measure will encourage democracy and create room for other people within the various political parties to also offer themselves for public office.

‘We totally disagree with the tendency of some opposition leaders who have turned their political parties as their personal to holder tuntemba (kiosks) by holding on to power and refusing to allow other people within their parties to also run for public office.

Mr Kamba explained that democracy was about competition and term limits.

“We should never allow wamuyaya (forever) behaviour in our politics because that is not democracy but dictatorship.

“Article 60 of the Republican Constitution clearly states that all political parties must hold regular conventions to ensure intra - party democracy hence all political parties that do not hold conventions must be deregistered,” he said.
