Civic leader bemoans shortage of teachers

- By NATION REPORTER

KAMPELEMBE ward councillor Stanslous Changwe in Chitambo district has called on government to deploy more teachers to schools in his ward.

Mr. Changwe made the call in interview with the Daily Nation. Mr. Changwe said there was need for government to consider deploying more teachers to schools in the area to improve the teaching and learning process.

Mr Changwe cited Misumba Secondary School which he said was supposed to have an establishment of over 32 teachers but had less than 20.

Mr Changwe said the poor pupil teacher ratio was not good going by the standard education practice.

He said if the situation was not improved, pupils’ performance would most likely be affected even during examinations.

“The ward is lacking enough teachers in schools. Government through Ministry of General Education should look into the matter and do the needful before the situation gets out of hand.” Mr. Changwe said.

And Mr. Changwe also cited Mpelembe Secondary as another one which needed more teachers to be deployed to the school.

He said the school only had 13 teachers against an16 classes, saying this was not encouraging.

Councillor Changwe said due inadequate teachers, all 31 pupils who sat for grade nine examinations last year, failed despite having nine teachers by then.

Mr. Changwe said he did not want a repeat of this situation and therefore appealed to government to intervene.
