Zambian crafts sales receive boost from PEPZ

- By BUSINESS REPORTER

PRIVATE and Enterprise Programme Zambia (PEPZ) yesterday launched an integrated programme to promote the sales of Zambian crafts both within the Zambian tourism sector and through the links to export markets.

During the launch at Hotel Intercontinental in Lusaka, a cooperation agreement was also signed by National Museums Board, National Arts Council and PEPZ to work together to support and promote the venture.

The implementation of the project is expected to start after this Easter break, and would initially focus on baskets and wooden artefacts.

PEPZ’s tourism manager, Namaya Mbikusita-Lewanika explained that the project included bringing in experienced designers from target markets to work alongside local artisans, to fine-tune their products to maximise their appeal to overseas customers while preserving local Zambian traditions.

“We are also inviting key wholesale buyers from the world market. The resulting trade will allow our local craftsmen and women to build successful businesses based on Zambia’s traditional crafts like basket-making and carving,” she said.

She said the project would deliver significant and longterm sales.

“It is anticipated that this project will yield a positive impact for thousands of artisans and crafts people within Zambia through enhanced sales and profitability,

“The plan is to expand the scope over the coming months to include a wider range of products.” she said

And Ministry of Tourism and Arts permanent secretary Reverend Dr. Howard Sikwela noted that for a long time, local tourism products and attractions had largely been in the area of wildlife and natural resources.

“This should completely change by developing and promoting other features in tourism sector such as the handcrafts industry,” said Dr. Sikwela.

Meanwhile, PEPZ team leader, James Blewett said the demand for tourism products on the international market was growing and that Zambia should take advantage to increase export volume of her products. Funded by UKaid from British government, PEPZ is a five-year programme that aims to increase the size and capability of Zambian firms and hence drive more investment, added value and jobs.
