30 shallow wells to be buried in Mtendere

WE have partnered with the Lusaka City Council (LCC) and the Ministry of local government to bury about 30 shallow wells in Kalikiliki, says Lusaka’s Mtendere ward 30 Councillor Watson Mtonga
In an interview with the Daily Nation, Mr Mtonga said about 30 shallow wells along the Kalikiliki stream will soon be buried to prevent cholera outbreak.
“We have identified about 30 shallow wells along the Kalikiliki stream which is also under my ward and we are going to bury them because we suspect that these might be the cause of the recent spread of cholera in our ward,” Mr Mtonga said.
But a resident in the area Karus Lukosha has blamed Mtendere residents for allegedly not observing hygiene standards.
“We should not cry to our area councillor or heap any blame on the local authorities, the problem is with us the residents who do not know how to maintain our surroundings or even boil or chlorinate our drinking water.
‘It is sad that we have also been hit in recent weeks by the cholera pandemic.” he said
Another resident, Justina Mwale said stringent measures need to be put in place to make sure that the cholera pandemic does not claim any further lives.
“There is need to put in place measures to ensure that the pandemic does not claim more lives, we urge our councillor to help us in this,” she said.
