Two unplanned settlements legalised

- By NATION REPORTER

TWO unplanned settlements in Mwembeshi ward have been legalized so far, says Mwembeshi ward 27 councilor of Lusaka’s Matero Constituency, Kelvin Kaunda

In an interview with the Daily Nation at the weekend, Mr Kaunda explained that the process of legalizing the unplanned settlements was very important so that people in the area could also be part of all developmental projects that were lined up in various communities by government.

Mr Kaunda said that ward officials want to ensure that all the squatters in the entire ward had their plots legalized.

He said from the time the process of legalizing unplanned settlements started two areas had been legalized namely Madaba and Anderson.

“Our aim is to make sure that as many settlements as possible are legalized.

“If unplanned settlements are not legalized it will be difficult for squatters to benefit from the national cake or from the allocation of the national resources.

The civil leader said that government could not plan for development in areas were land was not legalized adding that as part of their campaign promise they would live up to the standard of ensuring that all unplanned settlements in Mwembeshi ward were legalised.

“There are costs involved towards the legalization of these settlements that is why we are moving stage by stage.

“We make sure that these illegal settlements are legalized and it’s not something that can be made overnight it takes some time.

“We want to appeal to our people that were we have not reached that we have started the process people must be patient because we cannot bring on board and legalize the settlers at the same time.’’ He said
