YWCA decries high levels of prostituion on CB

- By NATION REPORTER

YOUNG Women Christian Association (YWCA) has bemoaned the increase of teenage prostitution on the Copperbelt.

YWCA Copperbelt Coordinator Sharon Chisanga attributed the high number of teenage prostitution among young girls on the Copperbelt to the love of alcohol and material things.

She was speaking in a telephone interview with the Daily Nation in Ndola yesterday.

Ms Chisanga said the Copperbelt had continued to record a high number of teenage prostitution, a situation she described as worrying.

She said prostitution worked against everything the Zambian government was aiming to achieve such as empowering young girls and women in the country.

“The act that many young girls are engaging in is very alarming especially at a time when government is pushing for females to be involved in key decision making in the country.

“Most young girls are engaging in this vice for the love of material things, alcohol, peer pressure and lack of identity and self-esteem,” she lamented.

Ms Chisanga noted prostitution also worked against efforts to eradicate sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV.

She said young girls were the mothers of the next generation, hence, they should be counselled in order to avoid a disruptive future generations.

In order to maintain the status of Zambia being a Christian nation, she said, it was imperative for parents and other entrusted custodians to take an interest in what their young girls were doing, who they hang around with and where they get expensive items.

Ms Chisanga therefore, urged parents and other partners such as the church, schools, feminist groups and others to preach and ensure morality in the young girl.
