Calls on military to bring sanity intensify

-

By NATION REPORTER I AGREE with suggestions by cross sections of society that military personnel should be re-called to bring sanity in Lusaka’s central business district (CBD), Integrated Community Anti-litter Initiative (ICALI) chairperson, Pascal Chikumbi has said. In an interview with the Daily Nation yesterday, Mr Chikumbi observed that all the gains of improved sanitation through the Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign were being undone by careless residents who have reverted to their old ways of throwing litter anyhow. Mr Chikumbi said it was unfortunate that the capital city which had become tidy following the removal of street vendors had returned to its former state due to some residents’ negative attitude towards keeping the surroundings clean. He described as wrong attitude by citizens to always wait on government through councils to rectify the situation when they were part of the problem and could help do something about it on a personal level. “This attitude we have of always waiting on the government to do something about a situation which we could do something about on a personal level is retrogressive and is undoing all the gains we have made in terms of keeping our city clean. “It is for this reason that we are urging for the recall of our men and women in uniform to restore sanity,” Mr Chikumbi said. He said the recently relaunched the Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign (KZCGHC) by President edgar Lungu would be defeated by the negative attitude of some citizens failing to adhere to cleanliness and hygiene. The non-governmental organisation observed that about only 20 percent of residents in peri-urban areas pay garbage collection fees while others throw their garbage at night indiscriminately ,making the work of the local authority difficult.
