THE Lusaka City Council has urged residents and business houses in the city to observe a clean-up campaign this Saturday in line with the re-launch of the Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign by President Edgar Lungu.
Lusaka City Council LCC , assistant public relations manager, Brenda Katongola said President Lungu declared every last Saturday of the month as a clean-up day. Ms. Katongola said during this day every Zambian was expected to take part in making the country clean, green and healthy. In a statement availed to the Daily Nation yesterday, Ms Katongola prodded all business in Lusaka to halt their activities from 06:00 hours to 10:00 hours to facilitate the cleaning process. She observed that during the previous campaigns, most people, institutions and organisations left all activities to LCC alone. “Key messages for the cleaning exercise include; every household, institution and organisation to pay for solid waste management through their community; during the clean-up day, open places to be considered; Councillors to mobilise local resources to help during the clean-up day; resources to be mobilised to include trucks and working tools,” she said. She said in order to have a sustainable campaign, the councillors would be in the forefront in mobilising community members, institutions and all organisations in their wards to participate in the activities. Ms. Katongola said all institutions and organisations or companies within the wards were expected to participate in the clean-up campaign which would include cutting of grass within the 33 wards in Lusaka She said institutions and companies were encouraged to plant Simba grass and flowers to make their surroundings green and ensure there were no heaping of solid waste as it was expected that all the waste generated during the clean-up exercise would be collected using equipment mobilised by the councillors.
