Residents demolish illegal structure

IRATE residents of Casanova area in Lusaka’s Kaunda Square Stage 2 yesterday demolished an illegal structure built on the sewer line with the wall fence attached to a ZESCO power substation as Lusaka Province Minister, Bowman Lusambo watched.

The residents who complained about the whole deal demolished the structure with their bare hands. Those interviewe­d said, a man identified as Mr Jere had continued constructi­ng on the reserve sewer line meant for the expansion of Millennium Challenge Account programme. They said each time they protested over the works Mr Jere called police to intimidate them. “He calls the police who come to intimidate us and threaten us that they would lock us up in police cells if we continue complainin­g about the same," said Joseph Banda. "When Mr Jere comes here, he insults and calls us names, saying that we are poor people therefore nothing can happen to him," said Mercy Nsama. Mr Lusambo watched while the wall fence was being brought down but told journalist­s he would not allow illegal structures to be constructe­d. The minister then phoned Mr Jere: Phone call Hello this is Hon Lusambo, what is this nonsense I’m seeing here sure? Jere: I don’t know what is happening. Lusambo: Come and see what is happening here, who sold you this plot here? Jere: National Housing Authority (NHA) sold me the plot. Lusambo : National Housing Authority sold you this is plot on a sewer line and next to power station? This is lawlessnes­s ba Jere naimwe, this is your country. You have to safe guard and be a responsibl­e citizen , can you come to my office tomorrow and I will invite other stakeholde­s and we need to find a lasting solution to this issue, but the first solution is that we are demolishin­g this fake structures which you have put here. Mr Lusambo is today expected to meet Zesco and Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company for way forward.
