Govt seals law training deal
GOVERNMENT has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Conference of Western Attorney Generals to train the law enforcement agencies in Zambia in legal aspects and how to tackle money laundering crimes, Attorney General Likando Kalaluka has disclosed. Mr Kalaluka observed that most Zambians lawyers have challenges defining money laundering crimes, a situation he said was making it difficult for them to prosecute crimes related to the vice. Mr Kalaluka said this yesterday in Lusaka during the opening of the ongoing anti-money laundering and other legal issues workshop organised by the Conference of Western Attorney Generals. He, therefore, called on lawyers and law enforcement officers to take advantage of the ongoing workshop which started in Lusaka yesterday to learn how to deal with money laundering activities. Mr Kalaluka said Government has embarked on a deliberate programme of ensuring that measures were put in place to provide capacity in law enforcement agencies to deal with such offences. He pointed out that one such measure was the Conference of Western Attorney Generals-organised training that is centred on money laundering. “This workshop is in line with the government’s intention and programmes to ensure that law enforcement agencies are well equipped as they prosecute various criminal activities. “The signing of the MoU with the Conference of Western Attorney Generals is intended to facilitate affordable means training of law enforcement in legal aspects,” Mr Kalaluka said. Mr Kalaluka disclosed that the MoU was signed sometime last year adding that the workshop was a follow up. And Mr Kalaluka said it was sad that the country has not benefited from the forfeiture of proceedings of Crimes Acts which allows the law to forfeit proceeds of crime.
