Zambia to host regional students’ conference
ZAMBIA will host end of year full Southern Africa Students Union (SASU) executive meeting to prepare for the 2019 Regional Meeting for all students bodies in Southern Africa.
We are happy with successes scored by ZANASU in defence of academic freedoms and for making a good case that reflects the good Zambian image— Mr Dhlamini
SASU Acting Secretary General, Maxwell Dhlamini said the decision to hold the end of year meeting in Zambia was made by a SASU Regional Conference which was held at Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg from October 25 - 28, 2018 and showed the confidence the student body in the region had in Zambia providing leadership. Dhlamini said last night in Johannesburg that the successful bid by the Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) to host the Regional Students Educational Summit was in honour of how Zambia and Zambian students had contributed to the liberation of Southern Africa. “We are happy with successes scored by ZANASU in defence of academic freedoms and for making a good case and making a case that reflects the good Zambian image,” Mr Dhlamini said. And SASU National Executive member from Zambia, Gerald Chiluba, thanked the SASU leadership for the confidence they had in Zambia hosting the Executive Meeting and Regional Summit on Education. Mr Chiluba, who is also former ZANASU Congress Chairperson, said he was confident that ZANASU was building the required capacity to host such a regional event and that Government should work together with ZANASU in planning for these events. The 2018 SASU Education Summit also stated that the Africa - China relations must be strengthened to include the need for China to help provide seed funding for education in Africa even as China pursued its business interest in the region. SASU has called on African leaders to negotiate for concessions that would ensure that China did not only come to do business in Africa but could also invest in the education of students in the region.
