61 pupils arrested in Kitwe
By NATION REPORTER POLICE in Kitwe have arrested and detained 61 pupils from various schools for alleged riotous behaviour when they staged a protest over government's decision to postpone this year's grade nine examinations.
The pupils, most of them grade nine pupils from Kamitondo, Kwacha, Kawama and Buteko Basic schools staged a protest near the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) round about. Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Charity Katanga confirmed the incident and said the 61 pupils have been charged with conduct likely to cause the breach of the peace and have been detained at Riverside Police Station. "Yes, I can confirm that police received the report of pupils protesting near ZNBC roundabout and officers rushed to the scene. At the scene, 61 pupils mostly grade nine pupils were arrested and detained at Riverside Police Station. "They have been charged with conduct likely to cause the breach of the peace and would soon appear in court. Let me hasten to warn that police will not entertain lawlessness by people who want to take the law into their own hands,'' Ms Katanga said.
