GOVERNMENT intends to provide universal television and mobile signal coverage in the next 18 months, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Dora Siliya has said. Ms Siliya said this called for consistent provision of local content as Government continued implementing the digital migration programme. The minister who was speaking when she officiated at a Digital Migration Conference in Lusaka yesterday, noted that there was also need to think of legislation to regulate and protect society in the wake of advancement in technology. She added that with the development of digital migration, there was need for interrogations of the digital space as they had come to stay. “Digital migration offers a number of opportunities that can translate into wealth creation for the country,” she said. Minister of Justice, Given Lubinda said there was need to come up with legislation that supports the growth of the media industry and also protects society from abusers of technology. Mr Lubinda added that Government would ensure it took into consideration interests of various players in the media industry in coming up with the legislation.
