Armed ‘commando’ nabbed

… Businessma­n found with eight unlicensed guns, ammunition and military attire

POLICE in Mpika have arrested a prominent local businessma­n for being in possession of eight unlicensed guns and more than 200 ammunition. Muchinga Province Police Commission­er Chola Katanga confirmed the arms haul in an interview with the Daily Nation yesterday. Mr Katanga identified the suspect as Modekai Sichalwe, 45, who was found with eight firearms namely, two 9 mm pistols with 163 rounds, three rifles, two revolvers and a Saiga shotgun. “Police on 31st October, 2018 received intelligen­ce informatio­n that a prominent businessma­n Modekai Sichalwe had an AK47 in his house. “Based on the informatio­n, a search warrant was prepared on Friday and a search was conducted at his house leading to the recovery of two pistols (Lorcin and Astra) 9mm caliber with 163 rounds of ammunition, three rifles, two Voere and one Saiga with serial nos:375GB217,338 Lapua FM0074 and Ho2063858 with 402,20 and 20 rounds of ammunition respective­ly,” Mr Katanga said Mr Katanga said Mr Sichalwe was also found with Saiga 3 short guns with serial numbers: 15652662, 15642036 and 13640435 respective­ly with 284 shells of 12 bore calibres. He said the suspect was also found with two pairs of Camouflage suits and one pair of cream white military boots. Mr Katanga said the suspect has been charged with being in possession of unlicensed firearms and unlawful possession of 252 ammunition contrary to section 26 of the firearms Act. He said the suspect was in custody and would appear in court soon.
