Vehicle re-registration starts early 2019 By NATION REPORTER

-

RE-REGISTRATION of all motor vehicles in the country is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2019, Transport and Communications Minister Brian Mushimba said in Lusaka yesterday Mr Mushimba said the re-registration of motor vehicles would, however, be dependent on a number of factors being resolved such as a regulatory impact assessment by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA). He said in a ministerial statement to Parliament that adequate sensitisation campaigns would be conducted countrywide to explain the reasons for the re-registration of the vehicles and the benefits to the owners. The payment for re-registration and motor vehicle examination fees would be mandatory and that the exercise might increase the cost of doing business, he said. He said as at September 18, 2018, of 166,418 offenders were captured by the speed cameras for exceeding the recommended speed limits in respective road sections. “Let me inform the nation that the rollout of speed cameras to the rest of the identified roads is planned for as well as extending this project to other towns such as Livingstone, Ndola and Kitwe in the near term,” he said. He said the speed camera project was aimed at addressing one of the key contributory factors in accidents and fatalities on Zambian roads which was over speeding. Mr. Mushimba said the ministry had observed a reduction in the number of offenders on a monthly basis since the introduction of speed cameras on the roads. He said the project objectives were being achieved and that a corresponding decrease in accidents and severity of accidents was also expected.
