NCP slams UPND judiciary attacks

This tendency by the UPND leadership to attack the judiciary whenever judgement is not passed in their favour is unacceptable and should come to an end because it undermines the court’s integrity — Mr Chanda.
THE UPND leadership’s tendency of attacking the judiciary whenever it ruled against them is unacceptable says New Congress Party (NCP) president Peter Chanda. In an interview, Mr Chanda said unwarranted attack on the judiciary were uncalled for as they undermine it's integrity. Mr Chanda was reacting to UPND 2016 Munali Constituency losing candidate Doreen Mwamba who described the Constitution Court judgement on the Munali Constituency petition case as foolish and laughable. Ms Mwamba charged that the Concourt judgement that overturned nullification of Professor Luo election and declaring her winner of Munali constituency was foolish and laughable. This follows Concourt ruling to uphold Prof. Nkandu Luo' s grounds of appeal against the High Court judgement noting that for an election petition to succeed, the petitioner needs to adduce evidence to the highest standard of proof adding that the standard of proof be substantiated. Mr Chanda said it was criminal and an act of subjudice for the UPND leadership to launch an attack against the judiciary each time a ruling went against them. He condemned Ms Mwamba's attack on the judiciary and urged her to respect the rule of law. "As NCP, we condemn the attack on the judiciary by the UPND leadership in the strongest terms. "This tendency by the UPND leadership to attack the judiciary whenever judgement is not passed in their favour is unacceptable and should come to an end because it undermines the court's integrity," Mr Chanda said. He said the UPND leadership should respect the Concourt ruling because it is the highest court with vested powers to preside over such matters in Zambia.
