GMO products seized from Food Lovers, Spar, Gatbro

…they have not been assessed for safety

THE Nation Biosafety Authority (NBA) has removed all genetically modified products (GMOs) from Food Lovers, Spar and Gatbro Distributors for not having gone risk assessed to ascertain their safety, says chief executive officer Lackson Tonga.

Mr Tonga said that after an on-the spot and compliance check by NBA it was discovered that the chain stores and distributor firm Gatbro had GMO products that were not subjected to risk assessment.

He said that following the operation the NBA directed Gatbro, Spar and Food Lovers to remove the products until the risk assessments were conducted to ascertain the safety of the products by today.

Mr Tonga further, said that the authority had permitted three applicants to import products that may contain genetically modified organism (GMO) having found their products safe for human, animal and the environment.

He said that of the three permits granted Cold Chain, Horizon and Innscor one Distributors were given a conditional import permit to bring some products which may contain genetically modified organisms.
