Cops cry over order to pay for wedding
SOME police officers have complained that a senior police officer at the Copperbelt division headquarters had ordered them to contribute money towards the wedding of his daughter who was also a police officer.
Police officers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, complained to the Daily Nation that they were ordered to make contributions towards the wedding preparations of the daughter to the senior police officer based in Ndola.
When asked if the senior officer was merely asking for voluntary contributions, the officers said it was an order and almost all of them parted with some money.
“It was an order, but others diplomatically refused, while others paid. We paid K300 while
others paid K200. We paid because if you refuse, the boss may find a way of fixing us,’’ an aggrieved officer told the Daily Nation.
When contacted, Copperbelt Commissioner of Police Charity Katanga said a wedding for the daughter of a senior police officer took place last weekend, but was not aware that officers were ordered to contribute money towards the event.
Ms Katanga said she would investigate the matter and establish the truth about the allegations.
“The wedding took place last weekend, but I don’t know about police officers being ordered to make contributions towards the same wedding. I will investigate and find out the truth.
“As far as I know, it is not in order to order police officers to contribute money towards the wedding of a son or daughter of a police officer,’’ Ms Katanga said.
