N/West fisheries department allocates US$1m to Aqua Parks

- By NATION REPORTER

THE Department of Fisheries has allocated US$1 million to support five Aqua Parks in North Western Province.

Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Permanent Secretary, David Shamulenge, said Government was committed to improve lives of people in the country by promoting aqua farming.

Dr Shamulenge who is in the province for a three day working visit said this yesterday when he paid a courtesy call on Provincial Permanent Secretary Ephraim Mateyo.

‘’We are going to advertise for the loans with regard to the same aqua parks from small-scale, medium to large scale,’’ Dr Shamulenge explained.

He said President Edgar Lungu wants to see every Zambian participate in the fish farming programme adding that Government wants to see to it that the production of fish increases from 40, 000 metric tonnes to about 80, 000 metric tonnes per annum.

‘’So we will be handing over a motor vehicle and motor bikes to the Kasempa aqua park for the sole purpose of fisheries and livestock activities,’’ he said.

He also said that other than fisheries activities, there were other activities in the livestock sector being undertaken in the province which needed close monitoring.

And Mr Mateyo expressed happiness that the project once fully fledged would create employment for the local people in the province.

‘’And let me assure t you that we will not sit idle as provincial administration but we will be making follow ups on this project,’’ he said.
