Simplify education system – Mutati

- By IRVIN MUYUMBWA

WE need to reorient our education system to reflect the opportunities that exist within a given territory to be able to give people survival skills rather than focusing on academics, government has been urged.

Minster of General Education David Mabumba has been called upon to ensure that schools across the country did not produce children who can only speak good English but fail to write, yet making social media as their key pass time.

Movement for Multi-party Democracy MMD President Felix Mutati said there was need for the Minister of General Education therefore, to reorient the education system to reflect the opportunities that exist within a given territory which learners can take advantage of as part of survival skills.

Speaking in an interview during his mobilisation tour of Eastern Province, Mr Mutati said the education system should move away from focusing only on academics which only gave learners the ability to have positive conversations in English yet sleeping hungry due to the lack of skill. “Let’s not produce learners that can speak good English only, that fail to write and whose key pass time is social media. Let’s orient our education system to reflect the opportunities that exist within a given territory to give people survival skills rather than academics only,” Mr Mutati said.

And Mr Mutati has called on youths to realize that no one will deliver money in their pockets apart from them working hard and notes that the enemy young girls are faced with is early pregnancies which should be avoided.

He said young people should realize that they might have satisfaction for a moment but are creating long term problems which only minimises their opportunities to succeed in life. “They must be able to sacrifice because today’s happiness could be tomorrow’s destruction. There is no substitute to education but there is need to simplify it to bring about efficiency,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Mutati said there was also need to deal with the bottlenecks facing the agriculture sector so that it could be moved from being purely a survival engagement to an income earner.
