ILLEGAL TIN MINING

- Dear Editor, FAIDESS SIMUNZA, Zimba.

I AGREE with recent sentiments by Zimba District Administrative Officer, Sekani Tembo, that Government should not tolerate people that were against development by blocking investors into the country.

He made the remarks during a stakeholders’ meeting on the Tin prospecting DALED Mining Company Limited in Zimba.

Mr Tembo noted that it was unfortunate that some people in the district were trying to bar the company from getting a mining licence so that they could start illegal mining and processing tin in Chilobe area of Zimba.

Mr Tembo said Zimba as a new district was thirsty for investors for it to develop, adding that it was surprising that some people were influencing the local people to reject the mining project.

Mr Tembo urged the traditional leadership to unite and engage their subordinates and accept the mining company in the area, emphasising that it would bring sustainable development in Chilobe and Zimba.

Honestly, this makes sad reading because some illegal mining activities have heightened in the area.

It is extremely sad to note that the same illegal Tin miners in Zimba have defied Government’s directive to stop operations.

This is despite the directive from Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Richard Musukwa to the police to stop the scourge.

Police should up their game and bring the culprits to book without fail.
