IoD HAILS LUNGU FOR APPOINTING ITS PRESIDENT AS ENVOY
THE
Institute of Directors (IoD) says the appointment of its president, Esther Munalula-Nkandu as ambassador to Belgium by President Edgar Lungu signalled the premium government put on good corporate governance.
IoD executive director Eddie Chunga said there was no question about that as the appointment speaks to the strong quest by government and business leaders in ensuring good corporate governance
“There is no question, the appointment positively speaks to the strong quest by government and business leaders in ensuring that good corporate governance played a pivotal role in enhancing social and economic opportunities for the more than 13 million Zambians,” said Mr Chunga
Mr Chunga said Professor Munalula-Nkandu’s tenure had seen intensified efforts to sustain progress in good corporate governance, a role the institute believed she would continue to play as she represented Zambia to international stakeholders.
“As IoD we believe this a critical time for Zambia to ramp up our efforts in promoting good corporate governance so that it is realised into more tangible, wide-reaching impact for the people of Zambia, and no one is better placed to carry out the role than existing and alumni of our institute.
“Significantly, the appointment is another notch in our endeavours to build a critical mass of decision-makers in both the public and private sector,” said Mr Chunga.
Established more than two decades ago, IoD had generally made tremendous progress in many areas of promoting good corporate governance, and successfully transformed into a premier institute, building local capacity and assisting some neighbouring states in setting up their own institutions. Prior to her appointment Prof Munalula-Nkandu, who is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, an international body that promotes governance, served as founder Dean of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Zambia, School of Medicine.
She had previously been head of the Department of Physiotherapy from 2000- 2013. She has also presided over the Zambia Society of Physiotherapy and has also served as chairperson of the World Confederation for Physical Therapy - Africa Region.
President Lungu also appointed two other women as permanent representative to the United Nations and senior private secretary, respectively, when he swore in Prof Munalula-Nkandu as ambassador to Belgium.
