A MANDATORY subscription scheme for waste collection in residential and commercial properties is in pipeline in Chipata to curb widespread disposal of garbage.

Speaking in an interview, Chipata City Council (CCC) public relations manager Kameko Manda said the approach would help enhance cleanliness in the district.

Under this arrangement, residents and businesses houses would subscribe and pay for routine waste collection and disposal services.

She said it was high time Chipata residents embraced decent ways of disposing waste in designated places in accordance with the country’s legal provisions.

“We are currently sensitising the residents and the general populace on the need and importance of subscribing to such a critical service. Waste management services should be prioritised like any other services,” said Ms. Manda.

The council facilitates for cleaning and waste collection services for most commercial properties in the city.

She said the council had provided skip bins for places where there was extensive waste generation.

“And we took it upon ourselves as a local authority to manage waste management services in markets and most commercial properties while for residential areas, we have allocated some local private for the services,” she said.

The council said through its health and communication departments was able to reach out to the people successfully and it was making a big difference.

Meanwhile, the council has continued to search for suitable place to be converted into a landfill.
