Mealie meal exports

-

Dear Editor,

WE have since expressed fears over the inconsistent rainfall patterns and climate changes which has left many people baffled.

What is worrying of late is the dry spell which may affect food security in the country.

So it is imperative for Government to restrict the issuance of trade permits for mealie meal exports to avoid creating a shortage of the commodity and risk the country’s food security.

Although it is not bad for the government to lift the export ban on mealie meal,

in as much as the move will contribute to economic growth, there is need to put up measures that will safeguard food security.

Government must ensure that it does not issue too many trade permits which might result in massive exports of the mealie meal and jeopardise the country’s food security.

Government must ensure that there is maximum control on the export of the commodity to avoid creating a shortage of mealie meal in the country.

Government should put up measures that will control the export of mealie meal so that as a country we don’t lose out. If every person is given a trade permit and allow people exporting the commodity we shall have a shortage of the commodity,” Dr Kayula has said.

Lifting the export ban would have a positive impact on the economic growth of the country.

Mealie meal exports to the region will help the country to earn foreign exchange which would consequently contribute to the economic growth, he said.
