LCC GETS TOUGH ON FILLED PIT LATRINES

- By NATION REPORTER

WE will prosecute about ten households for failing to empty their pit latrines and polluting the environment, says Lusaka City Council (LCC) public relations manager George Sichimba.

Mr Sichimba has threatened to prosecute more households that had failed to empty their pitlaterines following recommendations by LCC public Health department.

Mr Sichimba told the Daily Nation that the public health department inspected over 200 pitlaterines in Mtendere and Ng’ombe Townships regarding the status of the toilets.

Mr Sichimba said the recommendations have since been taken to the legal department of the LCC to study the matter and soon they will commence legal proceedings against the ten households.

“Last week public health department went back to re- conduct the inspection and it was discovered that about ten households failed to comply by emptying the pit-trines and by law they are supposed to do that, so we as the council we are going to use the same law to prosecute them under the Public Health Act, cap 295 of the laws of Zambia to prosecute them,’ said Mr Sichimba.

And LCC has also warned that it will shut bars and night clubs whose owners and their employees allowed underage patronage.

Mr Sichimba said there was need for proprietors of such premises to respect the law, saying the local authority would soon swing into action to inspect bars and night clubs in a bid to ensure that they were operating within the confines of the law.

He urged bars and night cub proprietors to heed the timely warning from the council and operate within the confines of the law.
