Vendors warned over alcoholic beverages
THE Lusaka City Council has warned vendors against illegal sale of liquor in public places or face arrest.
LCC Public Relations Manager George Sichimba disclosed that the local authority together with the police had put up measures to monitor and curb the illegal sale of alcohol in markets, bus stations and make-shift-stalls.
Mr Sichimba said that the council together with police would carryout routine inspections on traders that ignored the Liquor Licensing Act. He stressed that all those selling alcohol in make –shift stalls and without any proper documentation, were doing it at their own risk.
He disclosed that a number of people had been taken to court, after failing to comply with the Liquor Licensing Act.
He however disclosed that the council had a liquor licensing committee which was responsible for giving liquor licences to people
who had met the required standards.
A check by the Daily Nation in some parts of the city such as Lusaka City Market revealed scores of traders vending in alcohol without licenses.
“We have been against vending of liquor in open places and we are appealing to the local authority to clamp down on the trend, especially in bus stations, therefore, Zambia police service and council police should conduct a joint operation on traders that were found in the illicit sale of drugs and alcohol in make- shift stalls.
