Chipata shop owners face sanctions

- By ALFRED TEMBO

SHOPS operating without proper toilets in Chipata will be closed, district Commissioner Kalunga Zulu has warned.

Mr. Zulu said in an interview his office was determined to set a precedent and would therefore not hesitate to close business facilities found operating under poor sanitary conditions.

He said he was aware that there were some shops in Chipata down town area that were operating without proper toilets and called on owners to renovate the facilities to improve sanitation and meet the set standards.

“We are moving in to restore order in these shops and business houses operating without required basic sanitary facilities will be closed.

Mr Zulu was disappointed that some government offices in the city centre were also operating under unhygienic conditions thereby posing a health hazard to the people.

He said he would embark on random inspections of some government offices and private buildings to ensure hygiene standards were adhered to.

“We are moving in a new dimension. President Edgar Lungu launched the Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy, and it appears nothing has been happening.

I noticed there are some government offices operating with unclean toilets, this is uncalled for.

“It is high time we fulfilled the vision and ensure that all private and public buildings in the city are well kept in a clean state,” he said.

Mr. Zulu said it would soon become mandatory for all government buildings in Chipata to get painted and renovated to create a favourble working environment.

He said the government departments should set a good example by operating in a good working environment for business owners to emulate.
