Aim high, women prodded

- By PETER MALASHA

WOMEN should contest for high political positions to enable them to participate in governance and decision making processes in the country, MKushi North Member of Parliament Doreen Mwape has said.

Ms Mwape said in an interview yesterday that women should rise to decision making positions because they had allegedly been disadvantaged for a long time, adding that it was “now time to work together as a force to reckon with and contribute to national development.” “Women have been disadvantaged for a long time. My appeal to women is, they should come forward and show case their talents and skills," Ms Mwape said.

She recalled that in the olden days women were viewed as weaker vessels but it was not the case now because being a woman did not matter but one’s capacity to perform and deliver.

She said Zambia was a signatory to the SADC declaration on gender equality to attain 50 percent women in decision making positions, hence the need for women to get involved and contribute to the effective governance of the country.

Women were mothers who had big hearts for families and would make a big difference if they promoted unity of purpose for development, she added.
