THE work stoppage by the Copperbelt University (CBU) lecturers and other workers yesterday entered the third day with students appealing to Government to pay the lecturers so that they go back to work.

Copperbelt University Academics Union (CBUAU) president and spokesperson of the three unions at the institution, Derrick Ntalasha said the work stoppage had continued because the workers had not been paid their February salaries.

Dr Ntalasha told the Daily Nation in Kitwe that nothing had changed at the institution and that workers did not know when they would be paid.

“Nothing has changed. No salaries and it is not known when we shall get paid. With this situation, our members have no means of getting to CBU, which is our work place. So the work stoppage has continued,’’ Dr Ntalasha said.

The workers at CBU are represented by the three unions namely, CBUAU, CBU Senior Administrative , Professional and Technical Staff Union (CUSATSU) and CBU and Allied Workers Union (CBUAWU).

And students union leader Christopher Mutale said the students would chart their next course of action after a new Copperbelt University Students’ Union (COBUSU) is inaugurated.

Mr Mutale however appealed to the government to pay the lecturers so that lecturers could get back to work.

“Right now, we are trying to settle down after the Youth Day holiday, but I can tell you that a new COBUSU executive will be inaugurated today.

“After the new COBUSU executive is inaugurated, then we will chat a new course of action regarding the work stoppage by the lecturers, but we would like this situation to be resolved by paying the lecturers,’’ Mr Mutale said.
