M’membe’s socialist ideology is a non-starter for Zambia because it has been known to be a failed project, Christian Democracy party president Dr Danny Pule has said.
He was reacting to Socialist Party presidential candidate, Mr M’membe’s sentiments that it was impossible to achieve meaningful emancipation of women without eradicating Capitalism. Dr Pule said the same socialism ideology had failed to work in Zambia before, during the United National Independence Party (UNIP) government’s rule. He reiterated that as things stood, the country was functioning well with tan open economy and many in the country were in support of it. Dr Pule emphasised that socialism in Zambia was a non-starter as it had failed Zambians during the UNIP government, were it brought poverty and misery for the people. And Third Liberation Movement (3RDLM) leader Enock Tonga said socialism failed the UNIP government and the world as well. He said it was misleading for the socialist party to say that, it was impossible to achieve meaningful emancipation of women without eradicating capitalism. He said the Socialist Party’s calls for Zambia to adopt socialism was a joker and people should not take it seriously. “It is misleading and confusing for Dr M’membe to state that it was impossible to achieve meaningful emancipation of women without eradicating capitalism. This is what failed Africa and the world at large,” he said. He said the Socialist Party must understand that a Liberal or capital economy empowers individuals and that there were many types of feminism in the world today whose discourse was dominated by capitalists.
