Coalition govt unsuitable for Zambia, says Mpombo
THE proposed coalition government cannot work out in Zambia because the current crop of politicians do not embrace co-existence, veteran politician George Mpombo has observed.
The former Minister of Defence told the Daily Nation yesterday, it was prudent to stick to the presidential threshold and for the political party that wins to form a government of national unity.
“What I find dissimulating about the whole proposal is lack of clarity and appreciation of the deep- seated acrimony among big political parties which can make peaceful co-existence possible,” said Mr Mpombo.
“In my view, it’s better to return to the simple majority presidential threshold and the party that wins forms a government of national unity, besides I have yet to come across a constitution that clearly spells out a coalition government in face of an electoral impasse,” he said.
Dr Mpombo said “the current crop of politicians could not agree to put aside their differences aside or tame their political ambitions, a recipe for political instability and anarchy.”
He said inter party alliances had collapsed due to irreconcilable political differences, saying what hope do would be there for rampaging political gladiators agreeing on anything.
Dr Mpombo said already UPND had placed a ban on its members accepting ministerial positions in government, saying that the recommendation should be tossed out because it is preposterous.
“You will recall the forced marriage of political convenience in Ghana during the last term of Jerry Rawlings, it was a shameful spectacle with president Rawlings punching his deputy in full view of cabinet during a heated argument.
