Govt, WWF sign MoU to conserve environment

- By MOSES SINJWALA

GOVERNMENT and the World Wild Fund for Nature Zambia (WWF) have signed a memorandum of understanding MoU aimed at building resource utilisation and environmental conservation in Zambia.

Signing on behalf of Government Ministry of Water Development Sanitation and Environmental Protection Permanent Secretary Ed Chomba, said the government remained committed to attainment of effective natural resources utilization and environmental conservation.

Mr Chomba said Government was keen to ensure that awareness on the value and importance of natural resources conservation, environmental protection and sustainable exploitation of water was created among Zambians.

WWF country director Nachilala Nkombo observed that Zambia risked depleting its fresh water which was less than 1% if no deliberate interventions to protect water sources and resources were effected.

Ms Nkombo said the risk of water security was high and would escalate if no strategic plan and intervention was put in place.

She said not only was the scarcity of water affecting the people but freshwater species were also declining at an alarming rate of 76 percent much faster than terrestrial or marine species.

“At WWF, we believe it’s not too late to win this fight, through working with partners, by ensuring the maintenance or restoration of healthy river flows and good water quality in our river systems,” she said
