Female student, 4 men, in court for robbery

A FEMALE student and three men of Matero Township, have appeared in the Lusaka Magistrate­s’ Court for aggravated robbery involving over K14, 000 and a cellphone.

In this matter, Robert Chikungu, 28, a businessma­n, Joel Mwale, 26, a general worker, Gloria Aliniatwe, 20, a student at Standard High School and Abudulate Ahmed, 31, a businessma­n, are facing two counts of aggravated robbery.

In count one, it is alleged that on March 15, 2019 in Lusaka, the four, acting with others unknown, stole K14, 465 from Pembe Flour Mills Company and immediatel­y before or after such stealing, used or threatened to use actual violence to Francis Tembo to obtain or overcome resistance to its being stolen or retained.

In count two, it is alleged that on the same date, the four stole a Huawei P8 cellphone valued at K1, 100, the property of Mr Tembo.

Immediatel­y before or after stealing, the four used or threatened to use violence against Mr Tembo to obtain or overcome resistance to it being stolen or retained.

The four appeared before Lusaka Magistrate Felix Kaoma for the explanatio­n of the charge and after the charges were read to them, the accused persons said they understood.

Mr Kaoma then informed them that they will not take plea because they could only be tried by the High Court.

He said they will continue to appear for mention awaiting instructio­ns from the Director of Public Prosecutio­ns (DPP).

The matter has been adjourned to May 29, 2019 for mention and the accused persons have been remanded in custody.

In another matter, a female student has been charged with careless driving and using an uninsured vehicle.

In this case, Mirriam Silumesi, 21, of Libala is charged with careless driving contrary to Section 154 (1) of The Road Traffic Act, Number 11 of 2002 of the Laws of Zambia.

Particular­s of the offence are that on January 28, 2019, in Lusaka, Silumesi drove a Subaru Impreza registrati­on number BAE 3116 on a public road at NIPA bus stop without due care and attention to other road users.

In the second count, Silumesi is charged with using an uninsured vehicle, contrary to Section 87 (1) (2) of The Road Traffic Act, Number 11 of 2002, of the Laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that on the same date, Silumesi drove the said car when there was not in force such policy of insurance or security in terms of third party risk as complies with the requiremen­ts of the Act.

The accused will soon pear in court for plea. ap
